AVG AntiVirus Free

AVG AntiVirus is a family of anti-virus and Internet security software. AVG features most of the common functions available in modern anti-virus and Internet security programs, including periodic scans, scans of sent and received emails (including adding footers to the emails indicating this), the ability to "repair" some virus-infected files, and a quarantine area ("virus vault") in which infected files are held..

Supports:

AVG Free

  • AVG Pros
  • Configurable scan
  • Website rating and Do Not Track
  • File shredder
  • Email protection
  • AVG Cons
  • Annoying Ads pop on the free version
  • Poor score in anti-phishing test
  • Initial scan slower than average
  • Weak scanning scores

COST: AVG AntiVirus Free program provides decent malware protection, but doesn't add many extra features other than its included file shredder. If you want to add encryption software, dedicated ransomware protection, an enhanced version of the Windows firewall and Android antivirus software, you'll need to get AVG Internet Security at $70 a year.

SECURITY / RELIABILITY: AVG software has an average 'ease of use'. Looking through reviews of the software, even the ones dating back a few years will back this up. Ease of use means that users have access to higher levels of protection, through configuring the antivirus software to what suits them best. This is such an important factor to improving security. It is also what would keep customers come back for more.

FEATURES: AVG merged with its rival Avast in mid-2016, but AVG AntiVirus Free has maintained its own look and feel. It uses some of the same technology that's on Avast Free Antivirus, with a traditional scanning engine that matches suspicious code with digital signatures of known malware. AVG AntiVirus Free not only scans email attachments, but can keep you away from potential phishing websites based on their reputation and history. (Unfortunately, AVG still lacks browser extensions).  AVG AntiVirus Free collects data on your program usage and web history, but you can opt out of this collection in the Privacy section of the Settings menu.

Summary: AVG Anti-Virus Professional Edition 2019 still allows you to surf with more confidence than if you were unprotected, and stay protected on social networks. However, this software appears to be a bit more of a lag on our lab PCs.  It's free, but there are better options available for 2019.

Free version worked Ok, but missed some malware. I upgraded, but it was too expensive for something that didn't seem to do much more! May have to look elsewhere!

what I expected about AVG is the support, but there were numerous occasions where i needed help with certain aspects of the application and they were a bit slow.

Do not buy this software if you are looking to protect a PC or Laptop that is NOT connected to the Internet. The Installation will stall because it cannot find the server.

Despite the feature set, the application runs fairly lite on my machine. Decent protection with no system lag.

I purchased 2 avg products one 1pc the other 3pc. in May 2016, both are asking for renewal payment. I tried the chat line after waiting a while for response my laptop closed down. When I restarted my laptop, I find I am being offered both products at a discount price of $14.99 each if I renew in two hours. I think this is a rip-off. As for the product ??, I am unhappy with the service.

Had AVG last year, but I couldn’t reach them twice with some questions. I THINK I was protected, but was uncomfortable with not being able to talk to someone. Went with Total av, and much happier with the suport.

Dont bother with free avg. You get what you pay for in this case. I ‘m looking for a free scan, and if its good, I wouldn’t mind picking up a paid version. IF the scan is good!

Switched away from Norton which made my machine slow. ScanGuard is faster, more intuitive, and so far has protected my machine just as well. Very happy customer.

Who Needs Antivirus Software?

These days, everybody needs antivirus software.

Computer viruses don’t just come from streaming or downloading movies. Many people think that they can avoid potential threats by making sure they don’t visit certain websites or download certain files.

The truth is computer viruses can make their way onto your computer or any other device in a number of ways. You can pick up viruses and malware simply by checking your email, browsing the web or from putting a USB memory stick into your laptop.

Virus protection is a requisite of having your own personal computer. Luckily for you, there are hundreds of choices of antivirus software – each with its pros and cons. Making a choice between internet security software can be difficult, but that’s what we’re here for!

How Antivirus Works

Most antivirus software works on a signature database, monitoring the internet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Every time a new virus is reported – it’s indexed, catalogued and added to the software’s database. Once your antivirus software is up-to-date it is equipped to tackle the new virus should it ever reach your device.

How to Handle Viruses

You often have three options when faced with a threat on your computer: delete the threat, quarantine it or ignore it.

Deleting is almost always the best option, but some viruses make themselves "un-deletable" and quarantining becomes your only option. Your quarantine folder will keep the virus isolated and prevent it from spreading or causing damage to other files. Antivirus can be passive or active – passive requires you to make scheduled or manual virus scans, while active runs in the background; detecting and fighting threats in real-time.

Extra Features

There are a few key features that you should look out for when looking for antivirus software, and it will vary depending on your needs.

Online Protection - If you’re online, then you probably want an internet security software with a built-in firewall.

Email Protection - If you’re a heavy email user then you’ll want be on the lookout for anti-spam, spyware and phishing.

Parental Controls - Parents need to look for software with easy-to-use parental controls and restrictions.

Gaming Protection - Gamers can look forward to a "gaming mode," which prompts the internet security software to use less resources.

Compatibility - You will want to check the compatibility of your chosen software with your operating system, whether that be Windows protection, Mac OS antivirus and everything in between.
